Prayers from the Past - Richard of Chichester
Richard of Chichester was a 13th-century English bishop who is venerated as a saint. Born into a farming family, he was a brilliant scholar who went on to study at Oxford, Paris, and Bologna before being appointed Chancellor of Oxford University.
His life took a dramatic turn when he was elected Bishop of Chichester. King Henry III opposed his appointment, refused to recognize him, and confiscated the diocese's revenue. Despite being left penniless, Richard walked his diocese on foot, ministering to the poor and preaching the Gospel with great humility.
He is famous for his deathbed prayer, which is still widely used today: "Thanks be to thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits Thou hast given me... May I know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly, and follow Thee more nearly." His life is a testament to perseverance and unwavering faith.
Thanks be to you, our Lord Jesus Christ,
for all the benefits which you have given us,
for all the pains and insults which you have borne for us.
Most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,
may we know you more clearly,
love you more dearly,
and follow you more nearly,
day by day.
Amen
