Prayers from the Past - Philip Doddridge

Philip Doddridge (1702-1751)

Philip Doddridge was a highly influential English Nonconformist minister, educator, and hymnwriter. Born the youngest of twenty children and in frail health from birth, Doddridge was raised in a family that had suffered greatly for their faith.

He became a powerful preacher and a key figure in the evangelical revival in 18th-century England. More than a pastor, he founded a famous academy in Northampton to train ministers, where he taught a wide range of subjects.

Doddridge is best known for his hymns, many of which he wrote to summarize his sermons for his congregation. Although none were published in his lifetime, classics like "O Happy Day" and "O God of Bethel" became enduring favorites. His devotional book, The Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul, was so influential it even led to the conversion of anti-slavery advocate William Wilberforce. He died in 1751 at the age of 49.

Blessed fountain of life, I praise you for your living breath in me!

Bless my life with growth in grace, and increase my knowledge of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lengthen my patience, strengthen my soul in humility and zeal, and set my heart and mind on things above.

I hunger and thirst for your righteousness. Heavenly Father, feed me with the living bread of your Word, teach me to do what pleases you, lead me by your gracious Spirit, and renew your holy image within me.

I ask and hope through Jesus Christ our Lord, in whom we have received all the fullness of your grace.

Amen.
