Prayers from the Past - Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, born in 1906, was a brilliant German theologian and pastor who became a leading figure in the resistance against the Nazi regime. He was a co-founder of the Confessing Church, a movement that opposed the Nazification of the Protestant Church in Germany.
Bonhoeffer is famous for his theological concept of "cheap grace" versus "costly grace," arguing that true faith requires a commitment to follow Christ's commands, not just intellectual assent. His best-known book, The Cost of Discipleship, explored this idea.
During World War II, he became a double agent, working with the German military's counter-intelligence, the Abwehr, to secretly aid the resistance. He was involved in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. His conspiracy was discovered, and he was arrested in 1943. After two years in prison, he was executed by the Nazis in April 1945, just a few weeks before the war ended.
From: Letters and Papers from Prison
"In me there is darkness,
But with You there is light;
I am lonely, but You do not leave me;
I am feeble in heart, but with You there is help;
I am restless, but with You there is peace.
In me there is bitterness, but with You there is patience;
I do not understand Your ways,
But You know the way for me."
"Lord Jesus Christ,
You were poor
And in distress, a captive and forsaken as I am.
You know all man's troubles;
You abide with me
When all men fail me;
You remember and seek me;
It is Your will that I should know You
And turn to You.
Lord, I hear Your call and follow;
Help me."
