Prayers from the Past - Bede the Venerable
Bede, who lived from around 672 to 735, was an English Benedictine monk, historian, and scholar. Known to history as "the Venerable Bede," he spent his entire life in the monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow in Northumbria, a kingdom in what is now northeast England.
Bede was a prolific writer and one of the most learned men of his time. He wrote on a wide range of subjects, from science and grammar to theology and history. His greatest and most influential work is The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, completed in 731. This book is a foundational text for understanding the history of England from the Roman invasion up to his own time, detailing the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity.
Because of this work, Bede is often regarded as the "Father of English History." He was known for his rigorous scholarship, his piety, and his simple, humble life dedicated to prayer and study. His writings had a lasting impact, providing a crucial window into a period of history that would otherwise be largely unknown.
Lord God almighty,
open wide the door of my heart
and illumine it with the grace of the Holy Spirit,
that I may seek what is pleasing to your will.
Guide my thoughts and my heart,
and lead my life in the way of your commandments,
that I may always seek to fulfill them,
and that I may grasp the eternal joys of the heavenly life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
