Prayers from the Past - A W Tozer

A. W. Tozer, born in 1897, was an American pastor, author, and magazine editor known for his profound spiritual insights. He had very little formal education, but his deep self-study of the Bible and classic Christian literature earned him a reputation as a modern-day prophet.

Tozer was a fierce critic of what he called "lukewarm" and materialistic Christianity, challenging believers to seek a deeper, more intimate relationship with God. He believed that the church's greatest need was to rediscover a high view of God's majesty and holiness.

His most famous works, The Pursuit of God and The Knowledge of the Holy, are considered spiritual classics. Tozer’s life was marked by a simple, non-materialistic lifestyle. He never owned a car and often gave away a significant portion of his income to those in need. He dedicated his life to prayer and the study of scripture, leaving a legacy that continues to challenge Christians today to pursue a more authentic faith.

The Sacrament of Living

Lord, I would trust Thee completely; I would be altogether Thine; I would exalt Thee above all.

I desire that I may feel no sense of possessing anything outside of Thee.

want constantly to be aware of Thy overshadowing Presence and to hear Thy speaking Voice.

I long to live in restful sincerity of heart.

I want to live so fully in the Spirit that all my thought may be as sweet incense ascending to Thee and every act of my life may be an act of worship.

Therefore I pray in the words of Thy great servant of old, “I beseech Thee so for to cleanse the intent of mine heart with the unspeakable gift of Thy grace, that I may perfectly love Thee and worthily praise Thee.”

And all this I confidently believe Thou wilt grant me through the merits of Jesus Christ Thy Son.

Amen.
