Prayer from the Past - St Cyprian of Carthage
St Cyprian of Carthage (210-258 AD)
St. Cyprian of Carthage was a prominent early Christian bishop and theologian. Originally a wealthy pagan rhetorician, he converted to Christianity around 246 AD. His rise in the Church was swift, becoming Bishop of Carthage (modern-day Tunisia) around 248 AD.
Cyprian lived during a tumultuous period marked by severe Roman persecution of Christians, particularly under Emperor Decius. He grappled with critical issues facing the Church, such as how to deal with those who had renounced their faith under torture or pressure. He advocated for a path of penance and reconciliation, opposing stricter views that denied readmission.
Tragically, St. Cyprian became a martyr and was executed in 258 AD under Emperor Valerian. His writings, especially on the unity of the Church and the treatment of the lapsed, profoundly influenced early Christian theology and practice.
Prayer for Peace
We beg and beseech the God whom the enemies of the Church are forever provoking and irritating that he would tame their wild hearts.
May their rage subside and calm return to their hearts; may their minds, clouded by the darkness their sins produce, repent and see the light; may they seek the bishop’s prayers and not his blood.
Amen
